Deep vibration compaction is an established ground improvement technique for granular materials. The field experience and empirical relations used for the design of deep vibration compaction processes prompt further study and analysis. 1g model tests, field measurements and numerical simulations evaluated effect of frequency, relative density, shape of vibrator, spacing of compaction points, saturation of sand layer, nature of compaction process and type of sand; on the extent and degree of compaction. Vibrator amplitude was identified as an on-line compaction control parameter. Feasibility of deep vibration compaction for liquefaction mitigation was analysed via seismic site response of saturated sand before and after deep vibration compaction by means of numerical simulations.
