The probability of compartment and wing compartment flooding in the case of side damage : new formulas for practical application
he probability of compartment and wing compartment flooding in the case of side damage : new formulas for practical application. A new mathematical model for the distribution of side damages with respect to damage location, damage length, and damage penetration is presented. Its correspondence with the results of damage statistics is shown. For the probability that a compartment or wing compartment will be flooded, formulas are set up which are strictly based on the assumed distribution functions. It Is recommended to introduce these formulas in a revised subdivision regulation applicable to all types of sea-going merchant ships. The importance of such a revision is demonstrated by a presentation of inaccuracies and shortcomings resulting from the calculation method prescribed in the actual probabilistic subdivision rules for passenger and dry cargo vessels.
