Autonomous driving, connectivity and the electrification of powertrains will not only have a great impact on future generations of cars, but will also change R&D at car manufacturers significantly in their efforts for innovations. The system of product development and especially its resource system will transform and adapt to new requirements of future product generations. This complex change process needs to be planned and executed in the R&D-strategies of the firms. Considering competences, infrastructure, processes etc. the resources, needed for the development of future product generations, have to be transformed according to the challenges of the future. So the purpose of this contribution is to support R&D management in long-term transformation activities by proposing a strategy framework based on the theoretical cornerstones of the meta-model of the iPeM-integrated Product engineering Model and the explanation model of PGE-Product Generation Engineering. The proposed framework was applied exemplarily at a german luxury sports cars manufacturer in the context of a strategic transformation project to enable product development in the firm for future challenges.
