Starting asynchronous motors without frequency conversion means drawing high currents from the supply grid. In this thesis several measures (such as motor optimization, soft starters, autotransformers, slip-ring rotors and flywheel energy storage) are investigated and evaluated in comparison to a reference grid from a ship in order to reduce the current loading. Simulations and measured data show that the addition of a flywheel is an appropriate measure for reducing the power demand on the generator.
