Modern agriculture is facing a multitude of challenges that have rendered agricultural activity as we have known it for the past 100 years as either unfeasible or unsustainable, or both. Factors, both internal and external to core agricultural activities contribute to these challenges, which include, among others, soil degradation, water scarcity, biodiversity loss, greenhouse gas emissions, food and nutritional insecurity, and loss of livelihoods. Various approaches are being proposed to address these challenges ranging from suggestions to switch to traditional methodologies to suggestions to switch to non-soil agriculture and alternative proteins. While none of the proposed solutions can address all the challenges on their own, the efficacy of many of these can significantly be improved with artificial intelligence-based tools. For some of these solutions, artificial intelligence forms the functional core without which a solution cannot exist. The chapter discusses some of these solutions based on artificial intelligence in detail. Nevertheless, artificial intelligence alone cannot be a panacea for the agriculture sector; investments and interventions are needed to build the necessary infrastructure and capacities among farmers and land owners to enable them navigate the different challenges, with the aim of sustaining the life-supporting ecosystem services that agriculture provides.
