The influence of periodically applied overloads on fatigue crack propagation was examined for each a fine and a coarse grained aluminium alloy AA 2024 T3, alloys AA 6156 T62 and AA 7349 T76511, as well as a fine bi-modal and a coarse lamellar microstructure of titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The overloads result in acceleration or retardation of crack growth rate depending on the interaction of the overload mechanisms. As new mechanism, controlling the predominant retardation behaviour, the increase in microscopic roughness of the fracture surface due to steps parallel to the direction of crack propagation created by the overloads was revealed.
