A plastic yield mechanism was proposed to determine the static ultimate load of rectangular plates subjected to concentrated loads from such as wheelloads of vehicles or landing aircrafts, ice loads, collision loads, fallen objects etc.
By applying the principle of virtual work, aseries of analytical solutions were derived to estimate the ultimate load as a function of the plastic yield moment and plate and loading parameters with simply supported or fully clamped boundary conditions. An approximation considering the inB.uence of finite deB.ections is also presented. In the limit as the loaded area becomes very small, this ultimate load approach es the value predicted by Sawczuk [18J for a rectangular plate under a point load. In the other extrem, if the loaded area becomes very large, this ultimate load approach es the value predicted by Wood [17J and Jones [26J for a uniformly loaded rectangular plate.
It is shown that the solutions agree reasonably well with the corresponding numerical results by using nonlinear finite element method. Comparing with the elastical solutions and another suggestions, illustrated the solutions were more reasonable and practical because of the considering the most of important parameters.
