Learning factories function as complex simulations of real work and production processes, and in particular in order to be able to develop vocational competencies in an “Industry 4.0 typical" skilled work. In this context, they themselves represent cyber-physical systems that are to be designed at vocational schools as both a traditional learning space (learning lab) and a virtual/digital learning space ("digital twin"). The spatial and temporal dissolution of boundaries typical of "digital learning" cannot be met at first. Nevertheless, they make the digitality of the changed world of work the subject of vocational learning processes. At first, this paper reflects on learning factories as new learning spaces and on the contribution of cyber-physical systems therein. In a second step, the current state of implementation and concept development of vocational learning factories at vocational schools in South Germany is shown, based on the preliminary results of a survey.
