The increasing demand for dietary fibre in human and animal nutrition requires the use of previously unused resources. Pentosans, a major source of dietary fiber in cereals, are also found in bioethanol stillage, a by-product of bioethanol production. This work investigates options of producing and enriching pentosans from bioethanol stillage. For this purpose, analytical methods for the pentosans are developed and the stillage is comprehensively characterised. The results show that pentosans are particularly enriched in the liquid phase of the thin stillage. The process developed on this basis comprises a solid-liquid separation, a solubilization step and further purification by means of filtration. In this way, a product with a pentosan content of more than 50 %DM can be obtained.
