Microalgae offer a great potential as feedstock for a variety of high-value products and biofuels. The production of microalgae biomass requires, however, high efforts and consequentially large-scale outdoor production facilities are still a rarity today. The aim of this investigation is therefore to set-up and to operate an outdoor, high-density microalgae culture to monitor, analyse, and interpret the complex processes that unfold in the system. The research addresses important aspects including productivity and composition of microalgae cultivated outdoors and the effect of flue gas on microalgae growth. Moreover, the potential of biogas production from microalgae as a promising processing option is evaluated.
