This dissertation examines the phenomenon of over-engineered innovations, which often exceed the required performance levels and actual needs of customers. It explores the paradigm of frugality as an alternative to traditional performance-enhancing innovation strategies. Through a three-year action research project within the material engineering department of a leading German automotive manufacturer, the organizational antecedents of over-engineering are empirically analyzed and targeted intervention strategies are developed. The findings demonstrate how frugal engineering can be successfully integrated into existing development processes to create more sustainable and efficient material solutions. This presents a crucial opportunity for Western companies to maintain and strengthen their competitiveness in the global market.
