This thesis establishes the synthesis of monolithic, uniform nanoporous palladium via a single-step electrochemical dealloying of copper-palladium alloys in sulfuric acid. With this nanoporous palladium material, mechanical responses such as large strain and elasticity variations through electrochemically controlled hydrogen sorption are explored by in-situ dilatometry and in-situ dynamic mechanical analysis. The variation of experimentally measured Young’s modulus of nanoporous palladium with hydrogen content agrees well with prediction by Larché-Cahn open-system elasticity theory.
