The development of low-emission internal combustion engines requires a deep understanding of the processes leading to the emissions. In particular, dynamic oil entry mechanisms in the combustion chamber, which are not yet fully understood, as well as their contribution to particle formation are increasingly coming into focus in engine research. With the development and simultaneous use of a mass spectrometric analysis method for the differentiated investigation of oil emission sources and an aerosol measurement system optimized for the quantification of oil droplets in the exhaust manifold, these processes are being studied in steady-state and transient operation and fundamental insights are being gained.
