DSpace is an open source software on which about 45% of open access repositories worldwide are based (source: opendoar.org, 15.10.2019). In 2018, 25 academic institutions in Germany founded the DSpace Consortium Germany with the aim of strengthening the development of DSpace and securing influence on the development of DSpace, which is of strategic importance to them. The background to this foundation, the goals of the consortium and its members as well as the importance of open source software for sustainable research data infrastructures are highlighted in this article.
