The article presents the design task as an action-oriented instructional approach in work-oriented education. Design is understood as a learning process that integrates aspects of form, colour, and function in technical products. Using a structured instructional framework, key phases, objectives, and requirements of the design task are described. It is shown that open design tasks with a high degree of autonomy foster motivation, creativity, and reflective judgement, while enabling an aesthetically informed approach to technology, production, economics, and work.
