In this work, modeling approaches for the simulation of traveling-wave tubes in modulated operation are developed and characterized regarding their computational effort, their practicability, and the accuracy of the results. The impact of the nonlinearities on typical communication characteristics is evaluated, with the purpose of enhancing the understanding of the relationship between classical and effective modulated characteristics. Based on the gathered insights, an automated optimization routine is proposed, including modulated operation to improve the traveling-wave tube's behavior in modulated back-off.
