The continuous need for innovative sustainable technologies has led to an increasing interest in biocatalysts that can be applied in various industrial sectors including chemical, pharmaceutical, textile, paper and pulp, food and feed industries as well as for the production of renewable energy. In order to develop a new generation of efficient biocatalysts, there is a great need to discover novel enzymes exhibiting the desired properties for specific applications. Various strategies that are currently employed include activity-based (microbial and enzyme) screening and sequence-based screening (of gene and metagenome libraries). However, further technologies are necessary to overcome the bottleneck between screening and application. Besides the development of efficient expression systems and fermentation technologies, enzymes of interest have to be further optimized. This can be achieved by sophisticated molecular biology and protein engineering approaches including means of synthetic biology, directed evolution, and construction of fusion proteins.
