Laboratory classes are an important part of the curriculum in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) courses. In laboratory classes students develop an understanding of connections between theory and application in an experimental and research-oriented manner. In this brochure, a team of instructional designers offer suggestions on how to design laboratory courses to maximise student learning. We focus on didactical planning of laboratory classes, considerations when running the laboratory class concerning methods for e.g. group work, feedback and presentations, how to embed the laboratory class in the wider learning outcomes and how to to design documentation, analysis and transfer tasks.
