This dissertation develops a concept for integrating smart hand tools and digital assistance systems to improve assembly processes for complex and highly variant products. Using aircraft manufacturing as an example, the concept shows how information efforts and process errors can be reduced and how aviation-compliant documentation can be simplified. A four-stage integration approach combines tools and assistance systems within a software platform. Laboratory studies demonstrate increased productivity and quality as well as high user acceptance. Practical investigations highlight the concept's transferability to other industries.
