The “Early Stage“of the PGE - Product Generation Engineering aims at an evaluated product specification which on one hand includes a sufficient amount of differentiating characteristics for product success and on the other hand doesn't exceed a certain development risk. Decisions which are made at this point have a great impact on following process and product characteristics; those consequences can hardly be foreseen completely resulting in a high amount of uncertainty. Looking at the “Early Stage” in terms of PGE instead of classic new construction allows for better description and structuring of the situation. With that in mind this contribution introduces a definition of the “Early Stage” in the context of PGE. Based on the PGE approach reference products serve as an essential element to enhance the structure of the “Early Stage” and reduce uncertainty. A more precise description and a more focused design of the “Early Stage” improve the basis for necessary decisions as well as for the estimation of their consequences and thus the quality of those decisions.
