Coating systems protect maritime structures from corroding; nevertheless, coatings have a high probability to fail preferentially at highly stressed elements, i.e. welds, due to their exposure to cyclic loading. The increasing trend of installing offshore platforms, the aimed level of safety on ships and offshore structures, and the need of reducing repair costs is the motivation to investigate coating failures on maritime structures under cyclic loading. In this study, the state of the art of welds, which are placed in corroding environments, and their treatments before coating are evaluated. Especially, post-weld treatments and surface preparation regarding their influence on corrosion and fatigue are surveyed. This review conduces as a basis for further research regarding the improvement of corrosion protection and the increase in fatigue life of coated welds.
