The various changes in the construction industry caused by the effects of digitalization are increasingly influencing work processes on construction sites. In order to be able to respond to the modifications that are already taking place and, in particular, to those that will be increasingly necessary in the future, this study has recorded and analyzed the often interdependent and usual very complex relationships that intertwine during the construction of buildings.
At the beginning the current status of potential digital tools and instruments is listed. Based on a categorization of innovative technologies for construction site activities, it is discussed how new and future-oriented technologies affect the often purely manual processes. Thus, due to manifold implementations, not only changes occur in the context of detached work activities. Traditional processes are redesigned, conventional role models are changed or existing forms of communication are reorientated. In the course of the analysis, it has been identified that the BIM method in particular exerts a major influence on the existing, mostly analogous informatization processes on construction sites.
In the course of digitalization, the integration of innovative technologies also leads to an increasing number of human-machine interactions, which must always be taken into account in analyses of new types of tools and instruments, e.g. in the form of augmented reality applications or due to growing robot integrations. Especially in the construction industry, in addition to various site-specific factors, such as weather or dirt, non repetitive work activities on site must also be brought into focus. Taking into account a variety of aspects inherent to the industry, it has been shown that many processes on construction sites can not be substituted or automated.
As there are many small and medium-sized companies in the building industry, the question arises which digital tools and instruments are currently used on construction sites and how intensively they are already being used. Based on the assumption that most construction companies are using digital tools very little, an online survey was created to determine the current status of the use of innovative technologies on construction sites. The survey has shown that only a few companies have so far used innovative technologies
within construction projects.
In addition to the presentation of tools and instruments that will be relevant in the future, this study provides insights about the possible use of digital technologies on construction sites, on the essential processes of informations due to BIM, and also explicit specifications for educational concepts.
