An air-spring basically consists of a gas filled cavity surrounded by cord-rubber layers. The gas inside is gasketed by the rubber matrix and the cords carry the loads resulting from inflation of the air-spring by cavity pressure and deflection. To understand the fatigue life of such air-springs it is important to know the microscopic loadings between the cord and the rubber. A multiscale model is applied to calculate these loadings. The multiscale model consists of three separate models: a global model, a meso-scale model and a micro-scale model. The global model represents the whole air-spring system with all global boundary conditions and loadings. The meso-scale model is only an area of interest of the air-spring bellow which carries the micro-scale model. In the global- and meso-scale models a smeared constitutive material law is used to represent the composite material properties, while the micro-scale model represents the heterogeneity of the material. Node deflections are interpolated onthe boundaries between the global and meso-scale models and the meso- and micro-scale models respectively. The microscale mesh generation is automated using a tangential plane on the mesh of the meso-scale model. Some example simulations are made and the procedure and the results are discussed. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group.
