There is a broad consensus that the transition to climate neutrality will require significant imports of renewable hydrogen and/or molecules derived from it. It is currently unclear in what form these imports can best be realized. In this context, a novel concept has been proposed for Germany that connects existing LNG terminals with renewable hydrogen via synthetic natural gas (SNG) and has the additional feature of an almost closed carbon cycle. According to current industry plans, around 15 terawatt hours of SNG are to be imported annually by 2030, which corresponds to around five percent of the total capacity of the planned LNG terminal. The SNG route with a carbon cycle has not yet been independently investigated in the literature. This report investigates the proposed concept and compares SNG-based hydrogen import with other commonly discussed hydrogen import options (e.g. via ammonia, liquid hydrogen or methanol).

The report is available for download on the website of Agora Energiewende.
