Tool wear in the machining of titanium parts is marked by stochatically distributed and sized breakouts of the cutting edges. Therefore, it is hard to represent the wear by one single value. This paper shows a method that is based on the comparison of the actual spindle torque to the ideal torque computed by a simulation. This allows to characterize the wear by only one additional cutting force component and to set up a model for the tool wear as well as for the tool life time.
