Ceramic layers between 0.3 and 3 μm thickness were coated on high polished 42 mm CoCrMo-heads and cups for hip simulator experiments as well as for pin (10 mm) on disc (32 mm) studies. It was shown that ceramized articulating surfaces of CoCrMo total hip joints suppressed the roughening of the bearing surfaces especially during the run-in period. These data strongly supported the development of a low friction/low wear joint with such ceramized bearings.
