The fast and efficient development of industrial microorganisms for the production of new compounds requires an integrated interplay of various approaches to manipulate cell metabolism from atomic to systems level. Techniques from systems and synthetic biology, like protein modeling and design, greatly enhance our capabilities of metabolic engineering.
