In most cases, automotive suppliers have to derive variants based on existing product solutions in order to work out customer requests on time. The results of a questionnaire survey in one design department of the considered supplier company and, additionally, the analysis of construction data of concluded serial projects showed that during tender phase the efforts in design departments that are necessary in order to derive product solutions that fit customer and supplier needs are quite high compared to the overall design activities of the projects. Based on these investigations, the need for a methodical support for deriving and selecting of valid variants has been identified. For this purpose, this article introduces a method that supports the decision during the variant selection process using the product generation engineering approach. Herewith, the determined parts of new development and carryover of partial systems are an indication for potential, risk and effort of the derived variants. Based on a software tool, the developed method has been tested by design engineers and has been evaluated as useful.
