Reservoirs of low thickness provide potential capacity for CO₂ storage. The natural heterogeneity of permeability inside the reservoirs, mostly affects the lateral extent of the CO₂ plume. Arrival times and the average thickness of the plume depend on it. In contrast, the heterogeneity has minor impact on the reservoir volume affected by the CO₂ plume and, therefore, the amounts of mobile, residual and aqueously trapped CO₂ as well as the mean CO₂ saturation. Horizontal and vertical heterogeneity partially counteract, but the horizontal impact dominates in reservoirs of low thickness.
