A novel type of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) tapers in a multilayer stackup is presented. A simple and fast synthesis method is developed. The taper is modeled as a nonuniform transmission line with varying waveguide characteristics. These are determined using a transverse resonance method (TRM), which is extended to calculate a characteristic impedance. The synthesis procedure is explained and the results are compared to full-wave simulation. Measurement results of compact, ultra-wideband, and low-loss tapers at K/Ka-band validate the concept.
