Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is a specialized form of concrete distinguished by its high compressive strength of over 150 N/mm2, which is much higher than in ordinary concrete. This strength is achieved by using various types of high-strength, fine-grained aggregate optimized for packing density, such as quartz sand and quartz powder, as well as by utilizing very low water-to-cement (w/c) mass ratios as low as 0.15, as opposed to ca. 0.45 in ordinary concrete. In addition to decorative purposes as béton brut, its favorable properties are taken advantage of in structures such as bridges, high-rise buildings and wind-turbine towers.
