Appropriate models are essential to achieve high performance control for particle accelerators, which are the basis for free electron lasers. This papers deals with a significant reduction of the model complexity by exploiting physical symmetries of the plant. It is shown how models obeying the inherent SO(2) symmetry of the cavities and the radio frequency subsystem are set up and their parameters are identified from data generated at the FLASH facility. Validation of the symmetric models gives results which are competitive to those of black box models but with a reduced number of parameters. © 2011 IFAC.
