Even though various applications of generative artificial intelligence (AI) are currently a particular focus of research and educational institutions, AI systems are not actually technological innovations. For example, AI applications and AI-supported learning platforms have been used in the context of vocational education and training for many years, but are currently experiencing great interest, particularly due to the Covid19 pandemic and technological developments in recent years. This article therefore lists the historical background, technological developments and individual application options and potentials of AI applications and AI-supported learning platforms for vocational education and training and illustrates them using the example of university teaching. The focus will be on the various AI-supported learning platforms, which differ in their functionality but all have the aim of making the learning process even more individual and personalised for learners in order to achieve the best possible learning outcomes. Finally, an outlook is given on possible further developments of AI-supported learning platforms.
