Phenology is often used as an indicator for measuring the impacts of climate change. The phenology of the German federal state Saxony-Anhalt has changed in the last fifty years due to rising of air temperatures, caused by climate change. In particular, the growing-season shows a longer duration of up to 23 days, mainly caused by an earlier flowering rather than a delayed leaf-fall. Changes of the NAO-index in the last fifty years show a significant correlation to early-year-phases. Mean temperatures and height above sea-level have proven to be the most influential factors of the phenology of Saxony-Anhalt. The impact of other climatic factors, such as rainfall or dry seasons, appeared to be rather small. Low temperatures in the late spring season have a significant impact on the early-year phenological phases and strongly affect the agriculture, e.g. fruit-plantations.
