In this paper various methods of calculating the diffuse field in reverberant rooms are considered. In particular, a plane-wave model and a stochastic response analysis, which both are able to predict a diffuse field based on its stochastic properties, are compared in detail. While the former directly calculates the sound field generated by a number of plane wave sources, the later decomposes the energy density of the diffuse field. Additionally, the sound field in a reverberant room is also determined by means of a fast multipole boundary element method. The resulting diffuse fields from those methodologies are compared. Furthermore, the efficiency of applying these diffuse field models in a simulation of sound transmission loss experiments is discussed, and the accuracy of the calculated transmission loss with different diffuse excitations is validated by means of measurements. © S.
