Most of the models found in the literature to calculate forces in internal structures of the ankle and the foot, use one to three rigid body(ies) to mechanically represent the foot, and are limited to anterior-posterior movements. These models can not be used to quantify loading during medio-lateral movements. The model developed in this study is developed for a generalized three-dimensional situation, taking the functional medio-lateral sub-division of the foot into account. The model consists of 6 rigid segments connected by idealized hinge joints. An inverse dynamic approach was used to derive the equations of motion. Localized force information from a pressure distribution system was used to calculate the external forces acting on each segment. The location of each segment with respect to skin markers above bony landmarks was determined in a cadaver study, determining the location of each segment at various joint configurations. The cadaver specimen and the test subject were matched based on anthropometric measurements and X-ray pictures. Forces in ligamenteous structures were calculated based on the in vitro determined force-length relation of these structures at certain joint configurations. The single muscle forces were estimated using a neurophysiological control model approach. The model will be applied to lateral movements to investigate the influence of different external conditions (shoe, surface) on internal forces.
