In the course of digitization, there is a desire to conduct more examinations electronically. This requires in particular that the universities must provide appropriate hardware solutions and premises. Currently, the most common options are the use of PC pool rooms, “bring-your-own-device” approaches or “stationary test centers”. An alternative approach is so-called “mobile test centers”, where portable devices (e.g. notebooks or tablet PCs) are used to conduct examinations. Within the framework of the joint project “MINTFIT E-Assessment” of Hamburg’s public STEM universities, such a mobile test center for the joint use of all partner institutions was set up in the years 2019 and 2020, whereby devices of two product families were tested: Windows notebooks and Apple iPads. This article describes the setup and operation of the mobile test center. Technical and administrative questions are clarified, experiences are documented and in particular, it is discussed in which cases mobile test centers are preferable to stationary ones.
