Regarding the machining of elastomer seals the correlations between dynamic material properties and machinability are essentially investigated. In-process-photographs of orthogonal turning and external longitudinal turning tests show that the strains at the cutting edge can be understood as a penetration of a line load in a half plane, which leads to radial distributed negative strain in the elastomer. Based on these results a modell of the cutting process, founded on contact mechanics, is developed. The bending and friction of the chip are integrated.
