Cities and urban centres are driving the transition to a regenerative, resource- and material-efficient circular society. At the same time, they represent large material stocks and can already cover a relevant share of their demand for mineral resources from these deposits. Accordingly, more than 80 % of construction waste and residues are recycled regionally in the EU today. However, this is often happens in a low-value form, for example as filling material in dam or road construction. Significantly higher environmental benefits can be achieved through the reuse of components and materials or a high-value recycling of construction materials. This is the aim of the Horizon2020 project CIRCuIT, with which the cities of Copenhagen, Hamburg, London and the Helsinki region are willing to increase their transformation to circular cities through the reuse of buildings and infrastructure, the reuse of building components and high-quality recycling by at least 20 %. The City-Cluster Hamburg is also developing a roadmap for the use of recycled concrete as part of the project.
