Developing more sustainable products provides an opportunity to address the negative effects of current consumption practices. This dissertation explores how consumer goods companies approach the elusive goal of sustainability and identifies challenges in the product development process. Specifically, results from a qualitative study based on interviews with 32 product development managers as well as from a quantitative experimental study investigating consumers' responses to specific development practices are reported. The findings show that many companies lack a coherent sustainability strategy. Implications of the findings for product development processes are detailed.
