Smart monitoring and wireless sensor networks have advanced the worldwide implementation of smart city applications, improving the quality of life and reducing negative effects on the environment. The Internet of Things (IoT) has received special attention in recent years in the context of smart city applications, providing the technological backbone necessary to perform realtime smart monitoring of the built and the natural environment. Nevertheless, due to the variety of IoT elements and technologies used in IoT frameworks for smart city applications, new implementations of IoT frameworks for smart city applications may have redundant IoT elements or may use inappropriate technologies. This paper aims to summarize and compare emerging IoT elements and technologies utilized in IoT frameworks for smart city applications by means of a systematic review. As a result of this study, a summary and comparison of trends in IoT frameworks for smart city applications are provided. Furthermore, recommendations for future implementations of IoT frameworks for smart city applications are provided, based on the findings of the systematic review. It is expected that the findings of the systematic review and the recommendations for future implementations of IoT frameworks presented in this study may serve as a guideline and a foundation for IoT framework implementations in the context of smart city applications.
