Abstract (english):
The main purpose of this paper is to point out the development of the sewage sludge quantity in Turkey and in Europe by reviewing different studies to detect trends, which are characterised by legal framework and different disposal routes. Additionally, it should be elaborated if an increase in the amount of sewage sludge has to be expected and which reasons are indicated. Because of the introduction of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive 2006 as amended By-Law in Turkey, experts estimate an enormous growth of sewage sludge to more than 1 million tons DS per year in 2020 (ENVEST planners, 2005).
