An essential base for the analysis of long-term changes of water levels of a larger coastal section is a comprehensive source of long-term and processed water-level data. In the context of the project AMSeLOstsee available water level data of tide gauge measurements were therefore acquired and uniformly formatted into a database. Supplemented by digitizations of historical tide gauge records, a unique base for the analyses in the project was created. Subsequently, a methodology for the plausibility check of water level data was developed and applied in the context of a comprehensive data preparation using high-resolution hourly data. For comparison purposes, the data is (as far as possible) converted into a uniform reference system and known offsets are corrected. With the database developed within AMSELOstsee which is up to date and plausibilized using state of the art scientific approaches analyses have been carried out to assess the temporal development of extreme water levels. Based on the development of residence times and storm flood frequencies as well as an applied investigation methodology for the temporal change of the occurrence probabilities of extreme water levels, an overview of the current and future occurrence of storm surge levels on the southern and southwestern coasts of the Baltic Sea is given.
