The focus of the research project is on the nautical or navigable depth in the area of the couchettes in front of the quay walls. The sediment-carrying water forms the fluid mud on the river bed, a diffuse transition zone between suspension and soil with an intact grain structure (effective stress > zero). When ships immerse themselves in this fluid mud, they experience increased frictional resistance when they move. As part of the project, the rheological and soil mechanical properties of the fluid mud are investigated.
