Butane is an abundant side product of oil and gas production. Today it is mostly burned for energy and heat production. The chemical syntheses require high temperatures and pressures and is less selective. The biocatalytic reaction offers a selective way to convert butane to value products under low temperature and pressure. The Alkane-BGT Monoxygenase enzyme system expressed in E. coli offers a robust and fast model system for the microbial butane oxidation in lab scale. At first the transport limited process is established in a 2-liter bubble column with control system and under safety requirements obligatory when working with butane-air mixtures. Further, the process is characterized regarding the relevant process parameters gassing rate, temperature, pressure and butane content. The transferability of the process via the kLa value is demonstrated. The determined optimum could be validated and volumetric productivities of up to 9.3 mmol·L-1·h-1 could be reached. The scale up potential is discussed as a first step to an industrial oxidation of butane.
