Abstract (english): Inside printed circuit boards stitching vias can be used to short-circuit neighboring ground planes and thereby create current paths of low impedance. Regular arrays of ground vias in the form of fences can be used for the effective shielding of different circuit parts. While the shielding effect is evident at low frequencies a more careful analysis is required when the guided wavelength is in the same order as the ground via distances. This paper combines a 2D boundary element method, the contour integral method, with a unit cell analysis for two principal directions of regular arrays. Using this analysis for infinite periodic structures estimations for structures of finite size are also enabled. Furthermore, based on waveguide theory simple formulas are empirically derived that allow for an estimation of the attenuation up to the first cutoff at which the fences become transparent to waves.
