A problem-deduced system design process is applied within this research study in order to create a financial incentive or a necessity for airlines to reduce non-C02 climate effects, like the formation of ozone and contrail cirrus clouds. New solutions are generated, adapted and recombined iteratively by linking knowledge of different disciplines (aerospace, atmospheric physics, environmental economics). In this way, the concepts of climate-restricted airspaces (regulatory approach) and climate-charged airspaces (price-based approach) are developed and evaluated with regard to their mitigation potential, their profitability and their technical and operational feasibility. The functionality and effectiveness of these concepts are demonstrated with trajectory simulations in the North Atlantic flight corridor. More than 90% of the maximum mitigation potential of eco-efficient flying can be achieved by these concepts, which resolve the existing conflict of objectives between ecology and economy In aviation: Climate-friendly flying becomes economically attractive.
