The oceans deep sea ecosystem is an important driver of the global energy and element cycling, where prokaryotic cells represent the largest portion of the biomass. The role of bacteria in remediation of accidentally spilled crude oil, such as the Deepwater Horizon disaster in 2010, is prevailing. So far, most studies on the hydrocarbon degradation by bacteria neglected the hydrostatic pressure of the deep sea. This thesis investigated bacterial community structure changes induced by hydrocarbon input, such as crude oil or dispersing agent and hydrostatic pressure. Further experiments on hydrocarbon degrading single strain showed the species-specific responses to pressure and the addition of dispersant.
