The development of wind turbines can be considerably enhanced by the use of simulation methods. This also applies to a number of technical issues that are related to the emission of noise during installation and later on when operating the wind turbines. Because of the large size and the high complexity of wind turbines, the use of simulation methods is only advantageous, if the calculation models are distinguished by a particularly high numerical efficiency. In this paper, it is shown which calculation methods are recommended and what accuracy can be expected when they are used to predict or to reduce the sound emission. Two examples are presented to exemplify practical applications: (i) Analysis of vibration and acoustic emission during operation of a complete wind turbine (ii) Designing noise protection measures when setting up offshore wind turbines and possibilities to design an effective bubble curtain. In addition to the acoustical topics, also the numerical analysis of subsurface erosion to an offshore foundation is briefly presented. For the investigations mentioned above, a variety of numerical methods is used. In addition to the analytical formulae these are the Finite Element Method (FEM), the Boundary Element Method (BEM), and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
