The potential of wireless train-onboard communication is often underrated, although exciting and unsolved challenges persist, especially in the area of on-board control units and their wireless integration. For the estimation of the communication performance either cost-intensive measurements in train operation or realistic channel models for simulations are essential. The present situation in the real life environment is characterized by the fact that both types of verifications are practically unavailable to communication equipment manufacturers. Therefore, this publication aims to address the existing deficit of models. Using channel sounding equipment from Rohde Schwarz, channel measurements are performed in train operation for characteristic scenarios, resulting in a statistical channel model and subsequently enabling communication simulations. Multiple communication standards can now be tested against this specific model to validate 5G and further modulation and coding types for onboard communication.
